Renwick's "40 Under 40" See Traditional Crafts Reinvented

30 Jan
January 30, 2013 The phrase "arts and crafts" tends to conjure up images of kindergarteners fiddling around with tongue depressors, yarn and Elmer’s Glue. It rarely brings to mind avant-garde pieces that speak to the future of art. Even if you did imagine wild works of fabric and folded paper, you might think you’d only see them in modern museums in cultural epicenters like New York or Paris. Not downtown Washington, D.C. However, they are here for you to experience; in fact, this weekend is the last few days of a show that’s been running since July. The Renwick Gallery, a branch of the Smithsonian’s American Art Gallery, is dedicated to preserving this country’s craft and decorative arts traditions. Read more [...]

Arlington County Market Report – 1/22/13

22 Jan
January 22, 2013 Have you heard about the law of supply and demand?   Buyers want homes that are priced right and look good.  When a home like that comes on the market, it is likely going under contract in less than 60 days.  Supply is decreasing and with demand growing, homes coming on the market now are priced a little higher than they were last year. If you felt you were underwater on your home loan (meaning owing more on your mortgage than what you think your home is worth if you sold it) you owe it to yourself to find out the present value of your home.   You may be surprised.  Your home might be worth more than you think.   Is now a good time to be a seller?    Absolutely! December 2012 December Read more [...]

Courthouse's Revamped Movie Theater Provides Unparalleled Comfort

18 Jan
January 18, 2013 Modern technology has made a lot of our favorite activities seem arduous, inconvenient and sometimes even a bit absurd. Why write a letter when an email will suffice? Why head to a sporting event when the experience is just as good on TV? One of those quaint notions that has been struggling in the face of convenience recently is going to the movies. Tickets are expensive. The seats are uncomfortable. You need to arrive early, lest you get stuck in the front of the theater, straining your neck to see the screen. Often, it’s easier to wait until a movie comes out on DVD or on-demand where you can watch it in the comfort of your own home, on a nice TV, in your favorite chair. With sales and Read more [...]

15 Jan
January 15, 2013 Now that we have avoided jumping off the Fiscal Cliff, the real estate market in Manassas City can continue to climb towards the record "peak" selling prices of 2005 & 2006 where the average sold price of a single family (detached) home was $468,000. Have you notice all the new construction going on in our City?  New construction is so "HOT" the owners of Sunny Brook Golf Driving Range have started a subdivision on the left side of the range.  (If you hear someone yell "FORE", you better duck and run for cover!)  You might ask, why is new construction important? The answer is, as new home prices increase so do resale prices. This has always been the trend so come on new construction! In Read more [...]

Page County Market Report –1/14/13

14 Jan
January 14, 2013 The average sales price of homes being sold in Page County was $151,600 in November 2012, this is down from a year ago. One reason for the price decrease is that the inventory in Page county has recently doubled! More choices for Buyers means lower Prices for Sellers.  The average days on market has also increased. Unlike the neighboring County of Warren where prices are on the rise, Page County is proving to be a very affordable option for first time Home Buyers especially. The low home prices combined with the historically low interest rates in the 3% range make this a great time to buy!   Page County is an example of an area where Buyers can take advantage of the VHDA loan program Read more [...]

Twisted Vines And South Arlington's Revitalization

10 Jan
January 10, 2013 Almost the entire Washington, D.C. metro area is undergoing tremendous growth. From the bourgeoning Bethesda scene to Merrifield’s new Mosaic District, new spots in and around this city are plentiful. The Magical Seussical Finishes its Run at Imagination Stage

03 Jan
January 3, 2013 With the wide array of entertainment options available for children, it can be hard to get everyone to agree on one. But for most all kids, there's been one popular item in everyone’s childhood. That is the works of Doctor Seuss. Be it Green Eggs and Ham or the Cat in the Hat or Oh, The Places You Will Go!, almost every child, and by virtue, nearly every parent, has at some point snuggled up with and enjoyed the works of Thedor Giesel. And because his illustrations and stories are so vivid, so lively, it’s hard to remember that you’re only reading a book. But what if all those marvelous characters could come to life? For kids to watch in person, see run around in a mystical world, a Read more [...]
