It’s March, which means that one holiday is about to paint everyone’s calendar green. And although St. Patrick’s Day isn’t for another week-and-a-half, that doesn’t mean festivities haven’t already begun throughout the area.
The theme for several celebrations this weekend is walking and drinking, with bar crawls in both Dupont and Arlington.
The bigger of the two, and the most unique, is the D.C. Whiskey Walk. The event is a combination of a walking tour of D.C. bars (mostly Irish) and whiskeys (all Irish).
It kicks off this Saturday at the Board Room, one of D.C.’s newest bars. Alongside the drinks, you’ll find may of your favorite childhood games: from Connect Four to Operation to Candyland. The Board Room will be serving up Kilbeggan as your first drink of the day. From the Board Room, walkers can head south down Connecticut Avenue to Buffalo Billiards for a game of pool and a shot of Powers Gold Label. Next on the trail are three of D.C.’s most well-known and popular Irish bars. There’s Irish Whiskey Public House, which opened about two years ago; James Hoban’s, another relative newcomer to the D.C. scene; and a D.C. Irish institution, Mackey’s Public House, on L Street. The pours at the three bars, are respective of the places distinct personalities. At Irish Whiskey and James Hoban’s, Redbreast 12 Year and Tyrconnell will be served. At Mackey’s, it’s Jameson, the popular and famous Irish whiskey.
The crawl continues with two more bars and two variations of Jameson. At Maddy’s Bar & Grille, Jameson Select Reserve Black Barrel is on tap, while at MadHatter Dining House & Drinking Saloon, bartenders will be serving Jameson 12 Year Special Reserve. The crawl closes at Science Club, with Powers Special Reserve 12 Year.
The D.C. Whiskey Walk kicks off at noon on Saturday. Tickets for the event run between $35-40. Each ticket includes a one ounce pour of each whiskey as well as food and drink specials at all of the bars along the way. The Whiskey Walk is put on by Beerathon LLC, a company that, you guessed it, typicall runs Beerathon’s in cities throughout Washington,D.C.
If you aren’t interested in whiskey, you need not worry, because that isn’t the only option for a bar crawl on Saturday. Also going on, from 1:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. ,is the Shamrock Crawl, which will take revelers through some of Arlington’s most popular bars. Last year over 1,000 people attended Shamrock Crawl, all dressed up in green. This year they’ll be traveling between Mad Rose, Velocity Five, Mister Days, Whitlow’s, SoBe, Hunan One, Wilson Tavern and Arlington Rooftop.
Tickets for Shamrock Crawl are only $15, and include drink specials at every bar, including a special Shamrock mug to use during the event. If you aren’t interested in planning ahead, tickets are also sold the day of for $20.
Both events are limited to participants 21 and older. So if you are of age, and in the mood for some early Irish cheer, then this weekend has all the walking and drinking you could ever want.
