With Thanksgiving a little more than a week away, Turkey Trot’s are springing up all over the United States. These footraces are held on or around Thanksgiving Day with a purpose that is two-fold. Americans are known for being indulgent when it comes to holiday food, so the 5k race is an effort to burn off calories before the big meal. The fun run is also a chance to benefit local charities, with some organizations providing turkeys and other festive holiday dishes to homeless and low-income families in their community.
If you’re looking to stay fit during the holiday season, consider the Vienna Turkey Trot. Celebrating its 11th year on Sunday, November 24, 2013, this race also offers a 10k for serious runners.
Held at the Vienna Volunteer Fire Department at 400 Center Street South, Vienna, VA., participants are required to pick up a pre-race packet between 7:00am-8:00am on Sunday, November 24, 2013. The 5k and 10k begins at 8:15am sharp, with a 1-mile fun run for kids starting at 9:15am.
The 5k course starts at Cherry Street to the side of the Fire Department, goes to Elm Street, then to Cottage. The turnaround point on Cottage is at Patrick Street SW.
First place winners in both the overall male/female category and Masters (over 40) male/female category will receive a cash prize of $75, a trophy, medal, and organic, free-range turkey from Whole Foods.
Awards will also be given to the overall second and third place male/female winners, as well as the first, second and third place male and female winners of all age groups. Gift certificates will also be given from Fit4Mom Falls Church and Vienna Stroller Strides.
Registration fees are $30 for the 5k and $40 for the 10k. The 1-mile fun run is $15. Registration must be done online and closes at midnight, November 22.
